Here is a calendar of what your elf is going to be up to each day. Feel free to swap days or move things around! You’ll see some elf things correlate with an activity, for instance, one morning he/she has tickets for an at-home Christmas movie night. Our family loves to do movie nights on Fridays but if that date doesn’t work for you no worries, shift this schedule around as much as you need to!
Here is a list of all the materials you’ll need. I think you’ll find you most likely already have everything in your own home.

December 1st – Welcoming your elf
Your elf or elves will be making their first appearance. We love doing a holiday breakfast the day after Thanksgiving so it seems fitting to have our elf all set up and ready to go with ingredients to make a holiday breakfast. Not into cooking the day after Thanksgiving? No worries. Do donuts or have your elf popping out of a box of cereal. Just don’t forget to print off day one’s welcoming letter.

December 2nd – Up all night making snow angels
Sprinkle powdered sugar or flour onto your table or countertop and lay your elf or elves into it. Then move their arms and legs back and forth to create the appearance of snow angels.
December 3rd – Camping
Turn your elf on the shelf book into a tent by turning it upside down to create a triangle. Then lay your elf inside with a kitchen towel.
December 4th – Practicing wrapping presents
Wrap your elf in wrapping paper, ribbon, or bows to create the appearance they have been so busy wrapping presents all night that they even wrapped themselves.
December 5th – “Rock” climbing the Christmas tree
Attach a string to the top of your Christmas tree and tie one or both of your elf’s hands to the string about halfway up the tree. Tuck legs in to create the appearance they are “rock” climbing the tree.
December 6th – Fishing all night
Create a fishing pole by using a stick from outside/wooden skewer or even a toothpick. Simply attach a string to the end. Then place your elf on a higher level where you can place goldfish below to create the appearance he or she was busy fishing all night.
December 7th – Busy making snowflakes
Cut snowflakes out of your toilet paper with scissors.
December 8th – Hop scotching
Here is a hopscotch game for your elf. After printing it out, place it somewhere in your home and prop your elf onto it to give the appearance they have been hopscotching all night long.
December 9th– Candy cane zip lining
Create a zip line by attaching a piece of string from one area in your home to another area. Then tape your elf’s hands to the lower part of a candy cane. Then hook the candy cane onto the string to give the appearance they have been zip lining all night.
December 10th-Shoe Shoe train
Gather a few shoes from your home to create a ‘shoe shoe’ train. Place shoes in a line and place your elf in the first shoe. Then place other dolls or toys into the other shoes to create the appearance of a train.
December 11th-Christmas music dance party
Who doesn’t love a good dance party? Have your elf sitting on a speaker and propped up with his note. Then play your child’s favorite holiday songs.
December 12th– The floor is lava
Attach 4 Christmas present bows to the wall and stick your elf’s feet and hands into the bows openings making him or her stick to the wall. This will give the appearance they have been playing the floor is lava all night long.
December 14th– Let’s make hot cocoa
Below you will see a homemade hot cocoa recipe. Pull these items out of your pantry and prop your elf onto them so he or she looks like they are ready to start making hot cocoa together!
Homemade Hot Cocoa Ingredients
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups powdered milk or instant nonfat dry milk
- ¼ cup mini chocolate chips
- ½ Mini marshmallows
Directions
Combine all ingredients into a large bowl and whisk together. When you make to serve it add one cup of hot water to one cup of mix and stir. Enjoy!

Dec 15th – Let’s Color!
Gift your kids with a holiday coloring book and a new set of crayons. Have your elf holding a crayon showing they are ready to start coloring.

December 16th – Busy bookworm
Prop your elf against a wall and place a book into his hands. Then collect other dolls and toys and place them around the elf to give the appearance they have been listening to Christmas books all night long.
December 17th – Write letters to Santa
Have your elf ready to go with a pen or pencil in hand a paper ready to be written on. Then have your child write a letter to Santa saying all they are thankful for and what they are hoping for on Christmas day.
December 18th – Busy board game night
Prop your elf upright along with other toys or dolls. Place a board game in the middle of them to give the appearance they have been busy playing board games all night long.
December 19th – Magical rainbow
Prop your elf with a riddle next to a plate of Skittles. Have the Skittles lined up in a large circle on a plate and add warm water to the center. Slowly you will see the colors bleed to create a magical rainbow.
December 20th – Christmas scavenger hunt
Who doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? Print out the scavenger hunt and have your little one find all the items on the list.
December 21st – Christmas light sights
Place your elf on the tree tangled in Christmas lights along with the note. Tonight’s the night you’ll drive around the see all the Christmas lights in your neighborhood. Make some hot cocoa and play some Christmas music while doing it. It makes it that much more fun!

December 22nd – Hide and seek
Feel free to hide your elf wherever you would like. My kids always have so much fun searching for their elves in the morning. We decided to hide ours in the bathroom between 3 rolls of toilet paper that were colored to look like a snowman.
December 23rd – Let’s make Santas cookies
Prop your elf in a mixing bowl surrounded by baking ingredients to make your Christmas cookies!
Feel free to use the homemade chocolate chip cookie recipe below or if you don’t have time to make them from scratch buy a pack of frozen cookie dough!
Homemade Cookie Dough Ingredients
- 1 cup salted butter softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup light brown sugar packed
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 2 cups chocolate chips
Directions
In a medium bowl combine all your dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt). In a kitchen aid or with a handheld mixer cream together the butter and both sugars. After mixed add in eggs and vanilla extract and mix one more time before adding dry ingredients. Lastly, fold in your chocolate chips. Use the dough to roll out balls about the size of 2 tablespoons and place them onto a baking sheet. Bake at 375 for about 10 minutes or until they start to slightly brown.
December 24th – Reindeer food
Your elf is here to save the day with a little premade reindeer food to sprinkle in your yard later tonight. I use a mason jar with a scoop of dried oats and I add a little sprinkles to make it more festive!
December 25th – See you next year!
Place your elf on your fireplace or wherever your family gathers in the morning to open presents. Don’t forget to include your elf’s goodbye card.
