How to Design The Perfect Nursery

April 18, 2023

nursery glider, crib and dresser

I am excited to share a recent nursery project for one of my close friends. I know that not everyone has a best friend waiting in the wings to make their nursery dreams come to life, so I created a little how-to that makes the process easy and fun! For this project, I relied on Nurture& (my favorite nursery and kids furniture brand!) and couldn’t be more excited about how everything came together. Read below for my tried and true how-to for creating the perfect nursery.

Let The Furniture Anchor The Room

adding in furniture in the nursery

The biggest investment you’ll make in your nursery is the furniture. This should help anchor and guide the more decorative elements that come later. All of the nursery furniture in this project is from Nurture& and it couldn’t have been more perfect for this space.

1. The Glider

Any seasoned mom (or dad!) can attest that you and your baby will spend many hours in your nursery chair, and the more comfortable it is, the better off everyone will be. I love The Glider Plus because it has all the features one would want in a nursery chair, including a power recline, automated lumbar support, stain-resistant fabric, and a built-in USB charger! And from a design standpoint, it’s a streamlined, neutral piece that worked really well in this space but could be easily moved into a different room in the house.

2. The Dresser

This is a nursery must-have! It has a seven-drawer configuration and is intuitively designed to maximize space and organization while the sides extend and collapse as needed to accommodate more storage. We went with the color white which I thought was perfect for a baby girl’s nursery, but I also love their natural wood option! And I love that they make a matching changing topper. This helps the piece easily transition from a changing table during the baby years into a dresser when the diaper days are over.

3. The Crib

I love the modern look and feel of The Crib from Nurture&. It helps anchor the space without being too bulky like other cribs on the market. And it’s practical! The Crib adjusts to 3 different heights and converts into a toddler bed.

Invest in Pieces That Will Last

When purchasing furniture for your baby – safety, and durability are key. I also recommend investing in pieces that can transition with your family as the years go on. I love that The Dresser and The Crib are made from sustainably sourced, non-toxic materials and are truly built to last. The Crib was designed to convert into a toddler bed effortlessly, and The Dresser would look gorgeous in a kid’s room – or any room in the house. And a high-quality nursery glider like The Glider Plus will take you from nighttime feedings through bedtime stories, but it’s also an ideal living room recliner. Invest in high-quality pieces built to last, and you won’t regret it.

Consider Form And Function

As a designer, I love a gorgeous aesthetic! But as a mom, I also know how important function is, and I will never purchase something that doesn’t perform well simply because it “looks pretty.”  I love the fact that Nurture& was co-founded by a fellow mom who wanted to create a nursery and kids’ furniture that is both beautiful and thoughtfully designed.

The Glider Plus is the only nursery chair on the market that features both automated lumbar support and an adjustable headrest. I also love the stain-resistant fabric. I was able to opt for the beautiful ivory color, knowing that it would stand up to years of inevitable spit-ups and sticky fingers.

And I love that The Dresser arrives preassembled! I didn’t have to worry about spending hours tinkering around, trying to get the drawers to close smoothly. Everything arrived in one gorgeous piece! Assembling the flat-packed crib was easy. After following a couple of simple steps, I put together a beautiful crib that was super sturdy – a critical element when creating a sleep space for your baby.

Go Wild With The Details

Once you purchase your furniture, get into the DIY and have fun with the space! You can always change and edit decorative elements over time. So invest in the furniture and go wild with everything else! For this nursery, we went with a clean and modern look. We created a DIY wainscot using a chair mold from Home Depot (you can likely find this at any box store), and we painted three of the walls white and one light gray accent wall. We also swapped the existing fan with a smaller one to make the ceilings appear higher. After painting and installing the wall molding, we purchased a few additional items to pull it all together, including a colorful Persian-style rug and a name sign to help personalize the space.
