There is something so special about gathering your girlfriends for a cozy night at home—especially once fall arrives. My friends and I wanted to plan a girls’ night where we could actually spend time together, make a few fun DIY projects and end the evening watching a fall movie outside.
Because we chose Practical Magic, I leaned into warm fall colors, flickering candlelight and just a touch of witchy charm. Between the food, crafts and movie, it was the perfect way to slow down, be creative and kick off the fall season together.

Create a Cozy Fall Tablescape
I wanted the table to feel warm, layered and inviting without being overly formal. I used plenty of candlelight and brought in rich fall colors through the linens, florals and smaller decorative details. The candles made everything feel especially cozy once the sun went down and helped carry the Practical Magic feeling throughout the evening.
You do not need every piece to match perfectly. Mixing colors, textures and candle heights gives the table a more collected look—and makes it easy to use pieces you already own.

Keep the Food Simple and Cozy
Since we had several crafts planned, I wanted the food to be easy for everyone to enjoy throughout the night. I created one large grazing-style charcuterie board with meats, cheeses, crackers, fruit and plenty of little snacks. A friend also made a big pot of chili, which was perfect for a cool fall evening.
For drinks, we kept things simple with wine and midnight margaritas—a fun nod to the movie and such a perfect addition to the theme.
After the crafts were finished, we brought out dessert to enjoy during the movie.
Set Up a DIY Fall Flower Bar
Our first activity was a DIY flower bar. I purchased an assortment of fall flowers from Trader Joe’s and ordered small vases from Amazon. I displayed everything together so each person could choose her favorite flowers and create her own arrangement.
This was such an easy activity to set up, but it felt really special. The finished arrangements also doubled as a favor that everyone could take home at the end of the night.

Make Candles in Thrifted Vessels
For our next craft, we made our own candles using a candle-making kit. Instead of purchasing matching containers, we collected unique vessels from Goodwill, consignment stores and other thrift shops. The mix of vintage containers made each candle feel completely different and gave everyone the chance to choose something that matched her style.
If you try this, make sure every vessel is sturdy, heat-safe and free of cracks before pouring hot wax into it. You can also use the containers included with your candle-making kit if you would rather keep this activity simple.

Paint Spooky Mini Canvases
We also painted mini canvases with simple fall and Halloween designs. We created little ghosts, witches and other spooky scenes. No one needed to be an artist—the fun was seeing how different every painting turned out.
This would also be an easy activity to customize for any movie or season. Just set out small canvases, paintbrushes and a selection of acrylic paint, then let everyone create whatever they want.
End the Night with a Movie and Dessert
Once our projects we’re finished we brought out dessert and watched Practical Magic.
This night was the perfect mix of hosting, crafting and simply spending time with friends. It felt festive without being complicated, and everyone left with flowers, a handmade candle and a tiny piece of spooky artwork to remember the night.
